Language & Culture Courses

These courses are divided into 3 terms, each of approximately 10 weeks of class, starting in October, January and March. You can sign up for three, two or one term when starting in October, two or one term when starting in January and one term in April, with no previous Spanish knowledge being necessary.

The majority of students taking part in the term courses at Salamanca University are young students between 18-26. The reasons for taking part in this course are of academic and professional nature, as well as the appeal of taking a year of from their studies to experience a new culture and having a great time.

Content of Course

Although the three term courses are arranged as independent courses, students taking more than one term will not be repeating content as the content of the courses varies as you progress to a higher level. The trimester course has between 150-250 class hours per term and there are 4 main levels, as well as a number of sublevels depending on the number of students.

On the first day of the course, all students will have to do the initial level test after which students are placed into the adequate level group.

The structure of the courses is as follows:

  • During the first two classes, and irrespective of level, time is spent on Spanish language and grammar.
  • The third hour, and in the case of beginners, is for broadening vocabulary and basic conversation skills; instead of this, the higher levels can choose from a list of subjects such as History of Contemporary Spain, Speaking and Writing, The Role of the Woman in Spanish History, etc. The fourth and fifth hours (for students who choose the 200 or 250 class hour program), and in the case of the lower levels, are spent in the language laboratory and for communication activities whereas the higher levels can choose between a number of special subjects.
  • Subjects that the higher level students can choose for the fourth hour include: Spanish culture, Spanish literature, The Arabic World in Spain, or the practice of written skills. (only for students who choose the 200 class hour program)
  • Subjects that the higher level students can choose for the fifth hour include: history of Spanish art, Business Spanish or Spanish and Latin-American cinema. (only for students who choose the 250 class hour program)

  • Starting Dates: First Term 2009-2010: October 5th 2009 to December 16th 2009. Second Term: January 11th 2010 to March 19th 2010. Third Term: April 5th 2010 to June 11th 2010. First Term 2010-2011: October 4th 2010 to December 17th 2010.

  • Duration: approx. 3 months
  • Credits available: approx. 17 US semester credits for each trimester course.
